A few of my favorite things from SOFA Chicago (jewelry, sculpture, and the industrial design I was hoping for)

My first trip to the SOFA (Sculpture Objects & Functional Art) show in Chicago last Friday, November 2, 2007, was a success. According to the press coordinator at the show, about 300 jewelry artists were featured there. I saw some amazing work. I have a list of dozens of jewelry artists who I can't wait to learn more about (and who will hopefully appear in Art Jewelry soon). As I'm reviewing my list, so far, my favorite jewelry artist is Marianne Anderson. Her pieces look a bit like Edward Gorey gone graphic. Simultaneously simple and detailed. I love it!

I also had a hard time tearing myself away from a titanium-and-stainless-steel sculpture called Harmony with the Breeze by Kozo Nishino. The sculpture's wings flap. It was so calming to watch the beautiful movement. The pictures on ArtCourt Gallery's Web site show more of Nishino's work, which is usually large-scale. I just wish there were videos so we could see how the sculptures move!

Besides getting to check out innovative jewelry, I was excited to see anything related to industrial design. Within minutes of being at the show, my wish came true. Itay Noy's reversible timepieces hung in clear cylinders so you could see both sides. The pieces are incredible.

Did any of you go to SOFA? What are your favorite finds from the show?

About Kristin Sutter

I started working on Art Jewelry as the copy editor in April 2005. (At the same time, I was also the copy editor for Art Jewelry's sister publications, BeadStyle and Bead&Button.) So, I've spent more than two years learning all I could about jewelry and Art Jewelry's readers. My job was to make sure the magazines were easy to understand when they got into your hands. That's still my job now that I'm working solely for Art Jewelry, but now I'll also be doing some writing and, well, whatever Hazel needs me to do, really. I'm excited to have new challenges, to have fun trying out ideas, to work with this staff (such cool people!), and to be able to make this your favorite magazine!
