Home shows

Herkimer diamond necklace Katie's last post about upcoming fine arts and craft shows got me thinking about other ways artists get their work in front of a select group of folks who are likely to buy their wares. One popular trend these days is the "home show." Which is where I purchased this necklace of dangling Herkimer "diamonds." My friend received a personal invitation to attend this show that her friend was hosting for two artists–one makes jewelry, and the other designs chic handbags. I tagged along (the invitation encouraged bringing friends) because I'm always game for checking out one-of-a-kind jewelry, and because the hostess lived in a neighborhood known for its stunning old homes. When we arrived, we were welcomed into a friendly, casual gathering with a very nice vibe. Women were three-deep around the displays, helping each other select just the right necklace, earrings, or purse. There was no hard selling. The artists were friendly and welcomed questions. My friend and I each bought a necklace. We liked that the artist showed us how to finesse her slip-knot designs. If she hadn't demonstrated this, we wouldn't have known that the dangles can be moved along the main necklace cord. Or that you can also adjust the necklace's length. Genius, we thought. So we became customers. Just in time too, because we learned that the artist is retiring her jewelry-making to devote her time to her interior design business.

I'm wearing my new necklace today. Which prompted me to learn a bit more about Herkimer quartz diamonds. I found out that these double-terminated quartz crystals are mined from Cambrian limestones near Herkimer, NY. They're naturally faceted, with a diamond-like shape. I also learned that if you have a yen to mine your own Herks, you can hook up with Herkimer Diamond Mines, Inc.

About Jill Erickson

I joined the Art Jewelry staff in March, 2006 as an Associate Editor. The time really does fly around here. It doesn't get much better than working with artists, authors, fun co-workers and looking at jewelry all day. Another bonus to magazine work is the opportunity to attend jewelry shows and conferences -- I truly look forward to these "field trips" and the chance to meet and talk with our readers and contributors.
