My Dad is color blind. He has a common form of this color perception deficiency that means he just doesn't see reds and greens like someone who isn't color blind. I grew up helping him match socks and avoid disastrous wardrobe combos. But more than that, I learned just how personal color perception really is -- we all perceive color a little differently. How sensitive are you to detecting hues? I had a bit of fun with that theme when I wrote a project article for the May 2008 issue of AJ. The brooch I made for the article is basically a take-off on the Ishihara test for color blindness. (Those tests that the eye doctor gives you when you have a routine exam). I carefully made a mosaic using cured polymer clay rods in a series of subtle greens and muted reds. My Dad sees just a bunch of dots. What do you see?
About Jill Erickson
I joined the Art Jewelry staff in March, 2006 as an Associate Editor. The time really does fly around here. It doesn't get much better than working with artists, authors, fun co-workers and looking at jewelry all day. Another bonus to magazine work is the opportunity to attend jewelry shows and conferences -- I truly look forward to these "field trips" and the chance to meet and talk with our readers and contributors.
