Green Jewelry: if you're into pieces made from recycled, repurposed materials, check out jewelry by Mana Bernardes and the Touch NY show

Personally, I get excited about anything green — I mean both the color (my favorite) and the concept. I learned about Touch, a group of eco-minded designers, a few months ago when I came across jewelry by Mana Bernardes, whose jewelry is showcased on the Touch Web site. For anyone in the New York area today and tomorrow (May 19th and 20th), you can check out the Touch NY show from noon to 7 p.m. at 148 11th Ave. According to the Touch Web site, they'll have products and installations made from recycled materials. Judging from the pictures on their flyer, the show looks like a great place to find fresh ideas and inspiration.

Have you ever made jewelry with the intention of making it green? I'd love to hear about it — and see pictures!!

Hi, Kristin.  I just joined this blog earlier today and the first thing I found here seemed to be made for me!  I think my jewelry is very "green".  I design jewelry from broken or cracked china, porcelain and ceramic.  I'm a fairly new designer and so far have only made jewelry from cracked or broken china that I've come across.  What I'm really interested in doing is having people send me china that has meant something to them - whether the china was their mother's or possibly was used on a special occasion - that has now been broken or cracked beyond use.  It would give me great pleasure to take their unique china pieces and create something that would have special meaning for them.  I think it would be a really special way of giving their beloved china pieces new life.

China is something that seems to stay in families throughout generations and yet is fragile enough that it doesn't always last as long as we'd like it to.  So many memories and history are attached to some of our china pieces.  What a shame to just throw it away when it becomes broken or to put it in a bag and save it in the back of our closets because we can't bear to part with the pieces.

I'd like to show you some photos of my work but when I clicked on "Manage Photos" just a blank page appeared.  There are lots of photos on my website though - www.marjoriescracked.com.  Yes, the name's Marjorie's Cracked - Cracked Plate Jewelry, That Is - and yes, I am a bit cracked - just like my plates!  :-)

About Kristin Sutter

I started working on Art Jewelry as the copy editor in April 2005. (At the same time, I was also the copy editor for Art Jewelry's sister publications, BeadStyle and Bead&Button.) So, I've spent more than two years learning all I could about jewelry and Art Jewelry's readers. My job was to make sure the magazines were easy to understand when they got into your hands. That's still my job now that I'm working solely for Art Jewelry, but now I'll also be doing some writing and, well, whatever Hazel needs me to do, really. I'm excited to have new challenges, to have fun trying out ideas, to work with this staff (such cool people!), and to be able to make this your favorite magazine!
