Creepy Crawler flashback -- jewelry that broke the mold

The first jewelry I ever made had everything to do with Mattel's "Thing Maker" bug molds. This is back in the early 70s, when kids were encouraged to play with plastic goop, water, and electricity. Never heard of these toys?? That's okay. I'll school ya.

Back in the day, my brother had the complete Creepy Crawler kit. We're talking the whole shebang: aluminum molds of all manner of critters (bugs, toads, bats, skeletons, the coveted shrunken head -- you get the idea); squeeze bottles of colored liquid "goop" (glow-in-the-dark too!); a hot plate, over-sized tweezers, cooling pan, and "jewelry findings" like embeddable rings and such.

We spent hours making rubbery plastic creatures. It was fairly easy. First, ooze goop into a mold. Then, bake the mold in the hotplate. Next, use the tweezers to transfer this baked business into a pan of water. Finally, once the mold was cool enough to touch, the final step; emancipate your critter by peeling it from the mold. I was crazy about Creepy Crawlers. I turned some of my creations into pendants or pins. Feeling a bit nostalgic, I hopped on ebay to see what I could find. Check out my recent purchase:

Now, if only I can get one of those Green Hornet molds I liked so much.... ;)   Jill

I was just starting casting silver jewelry at this time and I was fascinated with the little beasts that came out the moulds too. I cast the whole series and set turquoise to make rings, bracelets and pendents. It was a lot a of fun. They didn't sell all that well but sure were a blast for big brothers to give to sisters.

Bentiron, do you still have any of those pieces? It would be a hoot if you posted a photo of them. I'd love to see 'em!  Jill

Jill, I will have to check with my sister. I don't know if she is still ready to speak to me again or not after the silver horny toad incident. My two nephews sure got a kick out of the silver bugs.

About Jill Erickson

I joined the Art Jewelry staff in March, 2006 as an Associate Editor. The time really does fly around here. It doesn't get much better than working with artists, authors, fun co-workers and looking at jewelry all day. Another bonus to magazine work is the opportunity to attend jewelry shows and conferences -- I truly look forward to these "field trips" and the chance to meet and talk with our readers and contributors.
