Downloadable templates of DIY ring patterns from Sarah Kate Burgess

I was checking out Sarah Kate Burgess's Web site and came across her patterns for making rings from paper, fabric, staples, etc. Her paper templates could, I suppose, be extrapolated to metal, but she has chosen the ephemeral qualities of these "temporary" materials to convey her thoughts about preciousness and permanence. Her "Momentary" series  questions what it means to wear something.

I also like her clever repurposing of everyday stuff, including her refashioning of melamine cups into jewelry.

When you are designing or making a piece, do you find yourself asking why we wear jewelry, or what it means to wear jewelry? Why do you chose the materials you do to make your work? (It's just one of those Mondays when questions seem to be swirling around in my head!) Cheers, Jill

Wouldn't it be fun to make one out of a clear plastic and stick a guppy in it. You know let it swim around, look at people or maybe one of the small frogs or crabs that you can get at pet stores. Maybe in the vane of the living rings have a water tight one an grow algae in it and have some sea monkeys living in there. If you are a member of PETA and want no animal harmed in the making of this ring cast small plastic fish and such in clear plastic resin. Such fun looking rings.

About Jill Erickson

I joined the Art Jewelry staff in March, 2006 as an Associate Editor. The time really does fly around here. It doesn't get much better than working with artists, authors, fun co-workers and looking at jewelry all day. Another bonus to magazine work is the opportunity to attend jewelry shows and conferences -- I truly look forward to these "field trips" and the chance to meet and talk with our readers and contributors.
