    basic tools needed

    Hi,

I want to set up an area for soldering, but I need to know what tools you would consider the basics, or ones most needed? I have a table to work on, so no bench is needed. And what is the best place to get them? I don't want it to be too expensive, but I would like decent quality. I also am looking for a torch, but I don't think I want an acetylene and oxygen one. Any advice?

Thank you for any help you can give me :)

Just what kind of soldering is it you want to do?  In other words, what do you want to wind up with?  Bezels, broaches, earrings, jump rings, or what?  And is this on sterling silver, copper, or something else?

I would like to do mainly bangles, but also bezels and whatever I can really think of :), and it would all be in sterling silver.

I don't want to insult you, so please take this as constructive criticism.  I think the first basic tool you need is knowledge.  So, try a DVD or CD on soldering, or even lessons from a pro.  Silver soldering is not the easiest thing for a newcomer, if you want good results.  If you can afford the time, and you are located east of the Mississippi, I would recommend a class at Holland School (www.lapidaryschool.org).

Once you get the knowledge of how to do it, than that will also answer the question as to what other tools you need.

I really enjoy making things from silver, and encourage you to explore the possibilities before you.

Hi - If you are considering a butane torch instead, Beadeducation has a free online class that is pretty good. It goes over the different types of torches available. The instructor also goes over some safety stuff when setting up your work area. Its pretty good. Here's the link. http://www.beaducation.com/classes/?p=detail&id=48 Also, utube has some videos that might be helpful.

I'm not insulted or anything, but I do know how to solder. All I wanted to know was were the best place would be to get a torch, but I don't want a oxygen and acetylene torch. I have a small butane torch, but it is not large enough to do bangles effectively. So where would be the best place to get a torch and the accessories to go along with it?
