need advice on digital controllers to upgrade my manual kiln

I've been working pretty successfully with a Jen-Ken GS manual kiln for some time, but I think it's time to upgrade to a digital controller. (Ok, the truth is I fired a load of pieces into a puddle of fine silver & glass goo the other day . I don't trust the analog pyrometer reading anymore.)

I've been researching various standalone controllers & don't think I need major bells & whistles. I don't need much more than a simple ramp and hold, plus I'd prefer to keep the cost under $300.00.

Does anyone have any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    JT

     Hi JT,

The only digital controllers I'm familiar with are the Sentry.  I have the 12 key controller on my Paragon Fusion 8 kiln and love that.  On my smaller Paragon, I have the 3 key controller.  Both are very reliable.  Not sure what the costs are for either as they came with each kiln.

From what you've described, I think the smaller, Sentry 3 key controller, would be what you would want.    You could always contact your kiln manufacturer to see what they recommend for an upgrade for the kiln you have.

    Just my thoughts.

    Hi Kathleen,

As I've been researching different controllers I've thought that a three key option would be a good fit as well. The 12 key sounds fantastic, but I've got a budget to stick to...

    Thanks for the input!

    Hi Kathleen,

I just clicked the button to purchase a Paragon Caldera.  Apparently the controller they're calling "manual" is a 3 key sentry...like yours. So, this can be used for PMC?  I just want to make sure I'm getting some kind of programmable controller.

BTW, anyone who's interested in getting a kiln. At Clay-King a Paragon FireFly is only $309. ( no shipping $$)  and it has an infinite switch ( which I think is just an ON-OFF)  BUT for JUST $ 15.00 more you can get the 3 key controller and an additional 2.75 " of headroom!!   What a deal!  ( and no shipping cost)   I'M SO EXCITED!!!!

    Take care...Roni
