Nanz Aalund / Termination from the magazine

I simply can’t believe how outrageously unprofessional Hazel Wheaton’s Orchid  post regarding Nanz Aalund’s termination from the magazine – I’m still shaking my head….

I'd been reading / scanning through the thread Minimal Metalsmithing on Orchid (ganoksin.com), and came to the Tuesday, August 07 digest and was absolutely shocked that Art Jewelry Magazine decided it would be appropriate to discuss Nanz Aalund's termination from the magazine on a public forum!   It's not 'our' business that Nanz was fired, it's Kalmbach Publishing Company business.   Please make amends to your subscribers and advertisers privately, and spare us the gory details of Art Jewelry Magazine employee relations issues.

Loopy – Please be assured that I did not send the e-mail to the Orchid Forum that appeared under my name. I have already discussed this matter with the list owners of Orchid, who assured me that it appeared to be from me by mistake, as it was forwarded by an unknown party without my knowledge or permission. I agree that it is not proper to discuss the matter publicly, and other than a post (which has yet to appear on the Orchid List) clarifying how that post came to appear, I will make no other public statement as to my reasoning for or the circumstances surrounding Nanz's departure from Art Jewelry. Regards, Hazel

Hazl, I had just drafted a letter to you which I will hold for now in the event that you did not place the post on Orchid. However, the same post has been posted to a metal clay group under your name. It was the combination of that post - to the metal clay community and then the post to Orchid which prompted my particular concern. Especially as AJM displays a significant amount of ads and articles on metal clay. Although I still have MANY concerns over the event overall, I applaud your statement:

I will make no other public statement as to my reasoning for or the circumstances surrounding Nanz's departure from Art Jewelry

It is fine to discuss the statements Nanz made and the topic of metal clay, but it would be HIGHLY inappropriate of you to discuss her departure in a public forum of any kind. That is what set off a flurry of 'unsubscribing' from AJM.

The entire situation is unfortunate to say the least.

    Geoffrey,

I was quite dismayed to see that revelation from Hanuman today, after Hazel's reply to Karen here, as it certainly makes Hazel's defense of herself seem disingenuous at best and deliberatly misleading at worst. I was debating coming back here and bringing it up, I'm glad to see someone else also noted the inconsistency.

    Thanks,

Agreed - what's the difference what public forum the news of Nanz's termination was posted on Hazel?!  Someone's personal and confidential information posted as fodder for worldwide conversation...that post was so beyond simply "unprofessional" that as a former HR manager, I can't even wrap my head around it.  I can't imagine a corporate culture that condones this type of behaviour by any employee.  Count me as one of the recent unsubscribed magazine reader and forum participant.
