How do I identify fine vs sterling silver?

Is there a quick and easy way to tell whether the wire I have is fine or sterling silver?  I am sure I have both sitting in my small stock, but I think I have neglected to label properly.  It's important now that I have a registered hallmark that I get the purity correct throughout any piece I submit for hallmarking.

    Hi Nick,

One quick way is to snip off  couple of inches of each and apply the flame of a small torch.  Fine silver will not turn black sterling will.

Fine silver won't take a patina either, but be careful if you've got finished jewelry that you are trying to ID, some of it may be electroplated with fine silver, or the maker may have raised the fine silver to the surface, and under the surface is sterling.
