Hi, I have some wire from The Bead Factory that they list as "Sterling Filled - The sterling finish is actually a SS/40 fill which is bonded to a pure copper core and will outlast by eons a standard micron-thin plate" and some gold filled listed as "10K gold finish is actually a 10/40 fill which is bonded to a pure copper core". I've made some chainmail bracelets that I just want to smooth out the edges of the rings. Can I put them in a rotary tumbler with jewelry shot (I believe it is stainless steel shot) for maybe 30 minutes or less to smooth these edges or will it take too much of the sterling/gold off? If not this method, are there any alternatives to smooth out the edges? Thanks.

I know regular gold filled can be tumbled.

If you are doubtful about what you have, can you take a few links off or make a few links and toss them in for 30 minutes to see?  You can then compare them to the bracelet and see if its worth tossing it in.
