Looking for an instructional soldering web site???

    Good Morning...

I would like to get into soldering...I took a course this summer but feel as though I need more help!

Does anyone have a web site/list of web sites that offer detailed instructions in tools, proceedures etc for solder, they could pass along????

    Any information is appreciated...

    Thanks...Happy New Year

The videos sound good - how do I get to them ?

Can I suggest an the article http://ezinearticles.com/?Basics-of-Soldering-Precious-Metals&id=855053 I found it helpful covers the complete process, but the bit I found helpful was about preperation, which I found wasn't covered elsewhere.  In term of solder & tools I'm in the Uk and use  http://www.cooksongold.com/category/Solders/, they have a good technical department who will help if your stuck + on-line knowledgebase.

    Hello AdamH

Thank you for the links...I will have a look shortly...any help is appreciated because I have to admit I'm a little nervous just yet!!

    About www.youtube.com

Here are a few links I bookmarked to watch, but I'm sure if you do some researching you will find many, many more...I just haven't had the time to look further.

Not sure if the one above is just for PMC or includes silver and gold...haven't had the time to watch further!

Anyway...if these aren't of help I'm sure you will find others on youtube...it appears to be a great site!

I'm so glad to see that videos like this are of interest to you guys. We've been working hard here at the magazine to expand our online video collection, but as you can imagine it can be a bit slow-going. We just added a few segments, though they're focused on wire and polymer clay more than metals.

You can see some behind the scenes photos in one of Jill's blog entries. And you can check under the "Videos" tab to see our collection to date.

Today I've actually got a large chunk of video time booked off. Our camera crew will get all their gear set up in our in-house jewelry studio this morning. And then this afternoon, I'll be taping a number of segments on making, soldering, and setting a bezel around a cabochon; and also annealing.

I know this doesn't help you right now, since it will still be a bit of time before all those segments are edited and polished up, so to speak. But I did want you guys to know that this is something that we're working on here. In fact, Jill will be taping some metal clay video segments on our next scheduled shoot in a few weeks, so be on the lookout for that too.

All of us at the magazine have compiled an ever-growing list of instructional videos we want to tape. So if you have any requests, post them here and we'll see what we can add to the list!

Thank you Addie for reply in to this thread...it is much appreciated!!!

I will check the Video section often as visual is better for me...sometimes the instructions no matter how great don't sink in for me!  :)

I did take a fabrication course in July 2007 but I was far too busy to do anything with what I learned until now and unfortuneatly I'm too far removed from the information for my comfort level.

I appreciate any help, or suggestions...

    Cheers Heather

    Hello Addie...

I took the time to look through all the videos you have and they are great!!!  Very helpful...the sawing of a hole was a good one...I don't think I would have thought of that!!!  Seeing the video of how to make ballpin ear wire couldn't have been better as this is the first soldering job I would like to try!

I also liked the way the video showed how to make jumprings...another great idea as I've tried making them with my cutters and they are terrible...I've never used the ones I've made!  I will certainly try this method!

Even making the sandpaper sticks is a great thing...

Being very new to soldering I would like to see videos on safety, tools and what they are used for, chemicals, their safety aspects and what they are used for, gauges of silver and what they would be used for, types of sandpaper and what they are  used for..all the basic things that a person who is just beginning won't know on their own!

I realize that is a great deal of information and probably far more than your intentions, but what ever you are able to do will be a huge help for all the beginners like myself!!!!!!  I will check back to see your what your next video brings!

    Thanks again...Cheers Heather

I would love to see product comparisons too. I've been trying to find reviews on butane torches and there is almost no information on that anywhere. It would be great if some of these trade magazines would start regular segments on that both in print and in video format. I think this would make it much easier for customers to choose the best tool for the job, and save people alot of time and money, as I'm not sure the manufacturers do that much testing and if they do they don't share the results with the public. The re-sellers often can't answer these questions, so it would be really good if the magazines could set up certain tasks to test these with and report how they perform.

    Hi

I also do not have much experience in soldering and found this little guide quite helpful.

     Good luck soldering!
