My Initial Foray into a new wire genre

This is my initial foray into this genre of wire work. Thanks go out to artist Felix, a.k.a. Andrew for the pointers on where to begin in terms of construction. Thanks for being generous with your time and advice!

I used copper for my initial experiment because I didn't want to be inhibited by the concern of wasting good silver in the event I crashed and burned, so to speak. I didn't get too adventurous this time around. I simply wanted to focus on structural integrity, clean finishing and get a feel for this type of work. I am pleased with my initial experiement and I look forward to hoaning my skills in this genre of work.

While working on this piece, I gained inspiration for another set of experiements which should be a lot of fun ... if I can pull it off, I'll be sure to post images of that as well.

The pic is not the best ... bad lighting and low batteries = a bad combination. I will replace this pic with a better one as soon as I'm able.

    Thanks for looking!

    Edit to add better pic

Delia! That is verra, verra cool! I have been itching to try something like this and have had studioheath's tutorial for months now, but haven't been brave enough! Kudos to you for trying and doing such a great job!

    Hi Donna,

Thanks for the reply.  This method of construction is very similar to the one in Remy's tut, though it's different at the same time.  I started it with an armature (hence the similarity) and a 'strip set' crystal, as Felix of would say.  It was a lot of fun and I can't wait to start my next one. :)

When I bought that tut from Remy a year ago I was just so intimidated.  It's such a complex style to begin with and it's such an extensive tutorial that I was just totally overwhelmed by it.  I experimented with some a spiral weave from her tut, but never quite made it through the whole thing.  Don't get me wrong, Remy's tut is great but I just wasn't up to the challenge at that time I guess.  I'm sure there's a lot that I could learn from going back over Remy's tut now.  But the way that Felix described it to me just 'clicked' and I felt prepared to undertake a small project so I went for it. :)

If you gain the courage to try that tut, be sure to let us see your results!  It's really a fun style and it would be cool to 'share the journey' with a fellow jewlery maker.

Hey Delia- Well, I gave it a try! I wanted to start with something smaller than the tut was, so I wasn't following it exactly. Well, right off, I couldn't figure out how to do the d%@ basket weave bail!! The core wires were sliding all over the place on me. I'll give it another go tonight. Funny how things look easier than they are! When, yes when, I conquer it, I will post a photo. Promise!

Delia, I think this is absolutely wonderful work!  I would love to try it.  Do you have a link to the tutorial?

This came out GREAT!  Very wise of you to start with "baby steps" and have great success and I think you are right that the more complex tutorial will make a lot more sense.  On this piece what strikes me is that is so balanced even though it's so free-form.  Nice job.

    Donna,

I know there were a couple of times I looked at my creation and though no way in hades could this tangled web of wires sticking out all over the place ever come together as a pendant ... and then, all the sudden, it DID.  So hang in there and don't give up!  I know that from what I recall about Remy's tut that the approach Felix suggested is much more simplistic and therefor easier for me to follow.  When I started the Remy tut I know it took me about a week to manage the pendant that I did finish, that again was only using a wee bit of Remy's tut.  I made it through the first few pages but never to the end of the tut.  Of course, one thing that makes a difference is that I've had a lot of practice at the basket weave since then so no doubt helped my 'time' as far as production goes.

Buy lots of copper, keep playing and eventually you'll be suprised that the tangled mess of wires in your hand actually suceeds as a pendant!

    Hi Mary,

I don't have the link to Remy's site on hand, but if you just google 'studio heath, tutorials' her site will come up.  The tut is $25 for those interested ... and again much more advanced.  It's practically a book ... so while some might gasp at the cost of the tutorial, know that she earned every penny!  It's a very detailed tutorial with a total of 66 pages!  She did a great job on the tut.

Can't wait to see your pretties!

    Thanks Jilla,

I do love the organic, but my eye does tend to prefer balance at the same time so I'm glad to hear that someone else other than myself can see and appreciate both qualities in this pendant. :)  Thank you for taking the time to comment.
