    Polishing - how to

    Hi there everyone,

I just wanted to ask you how to polish silver using standard discs with polishing compound and dremel(not original dremel of course). Right now I am using 3M mini polishing discs but they are expensive here at Poland and using off faster then Iwould like to. There is many many types of those disc... so which I have to use?

    Thanks, Marek

Back in the Dark Ages before 3M there were muslin(stitched cotton) polishing wheels that one applied the rouge to. Now there are kinds of wonderful polishing fobs to use. Before the abrasive impregnated rubber there was just the hard abrasive stones and of course rotary files. Before that emery paper and cloth and hand held Swiss files. There other brands that are cheaper then 3M but you usually get what you pay for.

OK, I'm sorry for misunderstanding what information you were seeking. I use two type of polishing compound. The first is tripoli and the other is Zam. I use the tripoli for rough cut of deep scratches and file marks and then finish with Zam. I used to have half a dozen sticks of polishing compound but have cut it down to two over the years. I only work with silver and copper so I don't need much else. I have a bench top polisher with two heads and numerous wheels. ring bobs and wire wheels. I use felt, leather and muslin wheels ranging from 4" to 10" in diameter. I also have a tumbler with steel shot that is great for complex pieces and chains. I'm sure that other will express their own personal preferences.
