    Right type of kiln

I'm keen to start using PMC but haven't yet as I don't have a kiln, and they are pretty expensive here in the UK.

There is a cheapie I can buy locally, but it doesn't have a temperature indicator, just a 0 - 10 dial.  I'm told it max out at 750°C - would this be useful as a starting point?

I doubt it, precise temperature control sounds like a much better idea to me. 750 C sounds pretty high, PMC needs about 1300 F, don't know how that matches up.

1300 F is 704 C  -  I didn't think precise temperature control was necessary - after all, torch firing isn't an exact science.

Precise is only necessary when you're including glass. Don't want to melt the glass!!!

Remember that you can always fire lower and slower (with the slow-dry types of clay), and it can't be fired too LONG -- only too HOT!

Good luck and congratulations on finding a [relatively] cheap kiln.

    Hi Nick

I am in England and also use PMC, I have two kilns. One for my glass which I can also use for PMC if I have large batches That is a big kiln. My other is a small beehive kiln which is tiny no controls at all.

You put the PMC piece in the small kiln, shelf is about 2 inches in diameter, switch it on and let it cook for about 20 minutes and then switch it off. Its brilliant, it works and it cost me less than £200. It is also very good for making Keum-boo which is fusing gold to PMC.
