    Exciting Bronze Clay!

I was thrilled to read Art Jewelry Magazine's article on the new bronze clay! I hope it becomes available soon. I can't wait to "play"!

is the pricing significantly cheaper than silver clay? I have a kiln but shy away from PMC due to the cost and difficulty working with it. (yes, I tried it - didn't love the result).

I have read through that article three times and I'm having a hard time seeing the advantage over traditional centrifugal casting or even gravity casting. It sure seems like a lot of bother. So does PMC for that matter. I don't want to sound like a curmudgeon but by time one buys a kiln to cook the clay products, the special little tools and spend the money for bronze clay or silver clay the only thing they lack is a centrifugal casting machine and that isn't always necessary. I'm sorry I just don't get the buzz.

I read the article. I see the product available in the brand new Rio Grande catalog ($20 per 100 gram package is nice price).  My question is about firing: 1. Obviously you cannot fire this with a torch like you can with the silver PMC, which means you'll need to stick the sink into a kiln. 2. What type of kiln or kilns did your tester use when they tried out the BronzClay. (I've sent a message to Paragon for their recommend...)

    Re: Exciting Bronze Clay!

    Hello Armadillo,

Yes, we try to stop by the forums as often as we can to check in, see what's being talked about, and offer our 2 cents. But questions won't always be answered directly by us in less than 24 hours, particularly when there are magazine deadlines swiftly approaching.

We do try though. Katie actually alerted me to your question yesterday, but I didn't have enough time to respond properly until today.

In our workroom here we use a Sierra Evenheat E360. It has an interior that measures 8"W x 6"H x8"D, which is just large enough for a bronze clay firing container and some short kiln stilts. If you're planning on doing much with bbronze clay, I'd suggest you get a kiln that size or larger (they make them with interiors of around 12" square). Since they're not exactly cheap, you don't want to have to upgrade to a larger size shortly down the road.

The other key is that the kiln must be programmable. The firing schedule for bronze clay is very specific, and it takes a long while to complete. I can't imagine baby-sitting a manula kiln for all that time!

Best of luck with your kiln shopping. And have fun experimenting with that bronze clay!
