    Loose gemstone or Ring?

    Hi all,

I wanted to know if it would be better to get a loose gemstone and then get it set according to my taste or should I just buy a readymade ring? Which one would be less expensive? Which one would be your personal choice?

Buy the stone and set it yourself. What is the fun in buying a ring? Anybody can do that but only you can make one for yourself. It will be a learning experience.

    Thanks Bentiron,

Thanks for your reply I will surely try it.

But I wanted to know will there be a major price difference between buying a loose gemstone and fitting it in the ring, then to buy a ready made ring???

It depends mostly on the gemstone I suppose. If you buy a diamond for $1.5K or a garnet for $0.99 then you have a very large spread in the cost of the stone and therefore the cost of the ring. I would think that you could get a nice stone for around $150 to $350 in just about any color that strikes  your fancy. If you have all of the equipment to make the ring the metal will not cost you that much more if in gold maybe a tad more if a bulky type. I usually work in silver so I'm sure my estimates of gold costs are way off considering the fluctuations in prices. If you bought a ready made ring the cost would be around $950 to $1,500 or higher. Maybe $500 or more  should be added to that for a custom made one. If you have a wholesale connection for the stone it will be considerably cheaper. If you don't have any of the equipment and are adding that to the cost of the ring then you can't afford to build you own ring.

a custom made ring is usually much more expensive than a ready made ring as one is a unique, bespoke, one-off and handmade and the ready ones are often made in series, cast or made in far east countries with very cheap labor.

Which way does your decision go?
