Description:

Hey All,

I haven't really been good with keeping everyone posted on my workshops.

Here's some pics of my work: http://s857.photobucket.com/albums/ab134/willie46/

I thought some of you on the forum might be interested in the upcoming wire jewelry workshops.

Here's the info on (2) workshops coming up soon.

2 Day Intensive Wire Jewelry Workshop - Reduced!

This is an 2-Day Intensive Wire Jewelry Workshop for people interested in creating unique designer jewelry with ONLY wire and gemstones...no glue, no solder, no torch needed!

You will learn 8 projects that vary from beginning to intermediate to advanced in 2 days.

You will also receive a FREE Faceted Stone Tutorial on CD plus many more bonuses.

You will be advancing to a 3-5 year wire jewelry artist within (1) weekend. You will still need to practice but now you'll have the foundation to move forward in your wire jewelry designs.

I'm an Award Winning Wire Jewelry Artist and I've taught thousands (20,000+) of students over the course of 20+ years. You will learn the "hidden" design formats that are new and exciting and will make your jewelry stand out from everyone else.

Many of the students from this workshop go on to become Award Winning artist and instructors.

This is limited to 8 students so sign-up is on a first come basis.

Date: Oct 17th and 18th Time: 10:00am to 6:00pm (with a 1 hour lunch)

Location: Marina Village Conference Facility

We have 5 spots left as of 9/14/09

1 Day Findings Workshop - Reduced!

Hey Everyone, I've set up 2 dates for the upcoming 1 Day Findings Workshop.

This will probably be the ONLY findings classes I teach due to the demand for my other designs.

Saturday Oct. 10th – 10:00am to 5:00pm or Sunday Oct. 11th – 10:00am to 5:00pm

Next open date would be:

Saturday Oct. 24th – 10:00am to 5:00pm or Sunday Oct. 25th – 10:00am to 5:00pm

This will be at the Marina Village Conference Facility in San Diego, CA.

The benefit of meeting at Marina Village is that we have NO time limit on the room. The rental is for the whole day which usually ends at 9:00pm.

This does help slow down the time we spend on each project plus give us the ability to review design options a little further.

I'll teach a range of findings that basically cover about everything you see in books and magazines plus some of my own findings that I use with my custom designs.

This really is a workshop I stopped teaching because I concentrated on the advanced classes and designs.

Sorry for NOT having any photos!

The list would include: handmade loop clasps, hook & eye clasps, bracelet clasps, design clasps, fancy clasps, earring designs, earring jackets, earring components, ear wires, 5 varied chain links, conversion clasps, detachable tassel findings & components, conversion findings, etc.

Here's the info:

Dates: Oct. 10th or 11th / Oct. 24th or 25th Time: 10:00am to ? (Marina Village)

Location: Marina Village Conference Facility in San Diego, CA

Reduced Cost: $150.00 – For any previous workshop student or Forum member.
This includes ALL materials.

The standard cost is $185.00 + $30.00 for the materials kit!.

Since this is a findings workshop I will keep the class size at 6 to 8 students.

It's easier to teach findings compared to projects plus everyone shares in their variations with each other.

Let me know if you are interested as it's filling up fast!

We have 4 spots left as of 9/22/09

There was an overwhelmingly large number of vendors, but only a few whose stuff I found really interesting. I actually had MORE trouble sorting out what was what than I do buying on the internet!

I did take two great classes. Robert Liu of Ornament magazine taught a photography class. From his handouts, I was expecting a fire-breathing dragon, but he turned out to be a really nice person and, of course, enormously talented. Hardly anyone in the class had a camera that would sync properly with the studio equipment her brought, but I got a lot out of the class anyway, and have a much better idea of what kind of setup I'd like to have.

My second class was a polymer clay class with Christi Friesen, which was a real blast! I wrote up a little more on the PC forum. I'd definitely recommed taking a class with her. It was a nice stretch for me as her style and mine are REALLY different, and I feel that I got a lot of mileage out of a short class. Do drink your coffee before you go, LOL. She is VERY energetic. And super-nice.

I have to say that in general jewelry seems a lot easier on the ego than science! LOL.

Jewelry 2,3-Art/Metal---Madison, Wisconsin

There are still spaces available in the Madison Area Technical College
"Jewelry 2 & program at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. FIT is extremely competitive from what I hear so I want my essay and portfolio to
be stellar! I have a print portfolio but am curious to know what makes
a truly great jewelry portfolio. How many pieces? Any must-haves? A
wide variety or a cohesive collection? Actual jewelry or illustrations
of ideas? Did you include a sketchbook?

I have a BFA in design
and am currently taking a silversmith course which is going very well.
I'm planning to apply to the 1 year program at FIT for 2010. It is a
bit scary and very exciting. Any and all input would be greatly
appreciated.

Wax Carving, Casting and Mold Making / San Diego

Wax Carving, Casting and Mold Making

A two day intensive workshop
Date: March 14th and 15th, 2009
Time: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Instructor: Jay Whaley
Lost Wax Casting is an ancient process, modernized by the Dental Trade, and an
important part of commercial and art jewelry production. This system of making a
wax model, melting it out of a plaster-like mold, and then replacing the wax
with molter metal, has many nuances that can assure a professional finished
product. Teaching this creative process has been a specialty of Jay Whaley, a
professional jeweler and instructor for over 30 years.

This two day, intensive, hands-on Workshop, taught by Jay will explore the
making of professional quality wax models, and casting them into precious
metals. Various shapes and hardness's of waxes will be covered, as well as
carving strategies to allow for balanced, precise wax models of a consistent
thickness and finish. Specialty wax carving, measuring, and layout tools will be
available for use in class and purchase. All hand tools will be provided for
individual wax work, and waxes, rubber mold material, and sterling silver will
be available for purchase in class.

Day 1 will be devoted to design, pattern layout, and wax carving. Day 2 will
demonstrate centrifugal casting of the models carved during Days 1. Time will
also be spent on Day 2 on finishing processes and mold making for model
reproduction. Rubber molds will be made from finished pieces and injected with
wax to create second generation wax reproductions.

Workshop Topics

* Laying out patterns, planning for carving
* Balanced and symmetrical models, and how to achieve them
* Using fabrication and casting for master models
* Carving techniques and tools
* Smoothing surfaces and special textures
* Hollowing Strategies, wall thickness, strategies for good castings
* Molding and reproduction for limited editions
* Tricks for carving and casting

Who Should Attend
Students, teachers, jewelry makers, suppliers, hobbyists

Fee
The cost to attend 2 Day Wax Carving and Casting Workshop is $200 (plus small
fee for Wax Rubber and Silver used.)

Registration is limited. We can accommodate only 9 students on a first come,
first served basis, in the studio, so don't delay if this is your passion or
curiosity.

For more information, feel free to call the Studio at 619.299.9619 or email

To honor "World Fair Trade Day" (May 10th) I thought that an Art Show was in order, especially a show of "repurposed" art.

I heartily recommend that you take a few moments to enjoy the wacky, wonderful and truly beautiful in the current show - Composting Good and Evil: Redesign for Sanctimonious Sinners now "live" on the Ethical Metalsmiths website at:

    http://www.ethicalmetalsmiths.org/CGE_Intro.html

A call for entries was posted last November on a number of websites and list serves and sent to schools and metal arts organizations.

Artists were asked to consider how to reconcile the way we consume the world's resources, our "evil" habits, with our "good" intentions.

They were asked "to consider what would happen if we tossed our smug habits into a heap? What would happen if we composted our shameless sins, our saintly intentions and our fertile imaginations and pledged to use the resulting fecund glory to redesign and nurture the world?"

Rethinking, redesigning, recycling and repurposing were encouraged.

Eighty nine artists responded. The resulting exhibition is a subtly subversive and engaging visual essay about choosing change; it is insightful, humorous, startling, ironic, challenging, beautiful, puzzling, erotic, traditional, thoughtful, accomplished and "other."

There was a digital screening and reception at the SNAG conference in Savannah in addition to its showing on an outdoor digital billboard in front of the building.

Professional Jeweler's Schools

I've decided that I would like some traditional professional jewelry education - my schooling was strictly the artistic side of the trade, and I am seriously lacking in a lot of the technical skills. I live in Indiana, so there aren't a lot of options for me if I don't want to go too far. What I really want is to learn stone setting & goldsmithing, as well as the basic repair things. I've found two places that seem promising: Connor Jeweler's School in New Albany, Indiana, and Drouhard National Jeweler's School in Mansfield, Ohio. Both seem to have good programs; Drouhard's seems to be cheaper, although I'm not sure if the class length is the same in both (I've e-mailed Connor's to clarify this).

My question for you all is whether you know anything about either of these schools, and do you recommend one over the other? Or is there another place that you would recommend instead? I want to stay within my bordering states, so preferably within Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, or Illinois. I might be willing to go further if I become convinced that it would be worth it.

Thanks to anyone who helps me out with this!!!

Bench Jewelers Conf & Orchid Dinner

I want to take a minute to thank ALL of the wonderful people that took the time to explain processes and demonstrate products and educate at the Bench Conference and Suppliers Expo!!!!

I attended along with close to 40 members of the Venice Adult School - Jewelry Making Program. From the conference staff to the experts demonstrating products - everyone was supportive, informative and made all of us feel like we had made the right career choice when looking to the Jewelry Arts!

Those of you who are sitting in a foot of snow missed out on four days of 80 degree temperatures in a location that was 15 minutes from the beach.

A special thank you to Mike at Foredom who went out of his way to speak to our class and to Lee Marshall who patiently let each student sit down and try his Knew Concept Saw...also to Dave with Allset; Vic Joyner with the coolest mold making system; Wayne Emery with his USB Little Camera; *** with ABI; the Fox Burr/Kyle Abrasives guys (this was a popular booth); speaking of popular - Oliver with Firescoff (who obliged every time I asked him to "demonstrate it for my friend"); and the Laser Welding Demos; Conference Speakers, Joel McFadden, Mark Grosser, and Steve Satow. Last but not least thank you Brad Simon (and his Bench family) for being such a gracious host and for bringing the conference to the West Coast!

The "Price is Right Game" on Friday was so much fun, and not just because I won a prize (thanks to the Stuller table). After the Suppliers Expo broke down on Saturday night we all met at the Orchid Dinner. This was a really lovely evening with about 7 Orchid members and a group of presenters who also joined us!

Lead by Brad Simon we all adjourned to the Latitude 33 Restaurant at the Marriott...the food was good and the company even better. Joel McFadden came with one of his apprentices (a lovely young lady, unfortunately I can't remmber her name), Mark Grosser (what a kick this guy is and so talented), Steve Satow (this guy is a genius with tools), and speaking of tools - Dave Arens, Wayne Emery (did you ever find your "yellow flowers"?), a wonderful artist from Idaho, Ingrid ( she does amazing stuff with antler, porcupine quills, etc.), my "date" Deanna (an engineer by day, jeweler by night) and presenting the "toy" of the evening (no, not his Knew Concept Saw - a FedEx pen!) - Lee Marshall - I can't say enough good stuff about this guy...he has made jewelry doable for "older folks" like me and has to be one of the friendliest guys around! Now I know that I am missing at least two maybe three people - please don't take it as a slight - like I said my memory isn't what it used to be!

Can you tell I was impressed?
Robyn Hawk

If you've felt that metals purchased from catalogs have not offered
you the creativity you need for your fabricated jewelry work, you need
to know how to make your own custom stock using a rolling mill and
draw plates. In this informative, one day, hands-on workshop, you
will learn how to melt and pour an ingot, and to make your own sheet
and wire stock of many different sizes and shapes.
In this workshop, you will get to use a Durston 120 mm D2 double mill,
a 120 mm Cavallin combination mill, and a special mill machined for
1/2 round wire stock.
There are also 2 portable drawing benches and an assortment of draw
plates. There will be a small materials fee for metals used.

Among the many topics covered in the one-day workshop:

Alloying your own metals for color, karat, and workability.
Setting up ingot molds for correct sized finished stock.
Safely pouring sheet and wire ingots.
Making square stock, and forming into half-round, round, and "true
square" wire.
Annealing strategies.
Planning for specific dimensions in finished stock.
Tapering wire for use with draw plates and drawing machines.
Narrowing and widening flat stock.
Making bezel stock in specific thickness and width.
Roller printing sheet stock with various materials
What to look for when purchasing your own rolling mill.

Jay is a master of the rolling mill, and has been teaching it's use to
