    Help with jump ring maker

    Hi,

I recently bought a Pepe Jump Ring Maker and I am really struggling with it. I am certain it is user error because I see a lot of people have great luck with it.  No matter how slowly I cut and how carefully I screw down the top, after the first few rings are cut, the coil jumps past the blade and the rest of the coil is damaged.  If anyone could help me, I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you!

It's hard to believe that no one has one except for you so I suggest that maybe you try to get an answer over at the Ganoksin Orchid forum. There are a lot of professional jewelers over there and they may be able to help. They also have and extensive forum archive for you to search. If they can't maybe you could try asking the Pepe folk on line if they have a suggestion.

    Hi Julian,

This is a hard one to answer without actually watching you do it, which is probably why no one has responded.  You say "the coil jumps past the blade".  Does this mean that the coil is being pulled into and through the blade?  If so, then it sounds like you might be sawing in the wrong direction because the spinning blade is always pushing the coil away.  Are you left handed?  Check out the directions at http://www.desiredcreations.com/howTo_TLKoilKutter.htm.  They are for the Koil Kutter, but it operates the same as all the others.

Thank you!  I don't have time to try it right now but the directions on the link you gave me are much better.  I have been holding the cutting tool primarily with my left hand instead of my right hand as it shows in the directions I have.  These directions show the opposite.  I'll let you know how it works.

Thank you both for your help. The new directions were perfect. It now works.....like a knife through butter.  I should have asked sooner.  Luckily, I was using copper but went through a few blades.  Expensive!

A trick I use is a strip of masking tape the length of the coil. It is placed at the top of the coil and gets cut through when making the cut. It keeps all of the jump rings in place and seems to help prevent the coil from folding up near the end of the cut.

I just found a better instruction set for the Pepe Jump Ring Maker on the Pepe website. You might find it helpful. http://www.pepetools.com/product_tip.php/product_id/724
