Temperature controller unit with certain wattages

    Hi all,

I have an old Trinkit kiln which I'm sure heats up to more than 1550 degrees....more than an UltraLite b/c it uses only 240 watts.

Anyway, I have a temp controller unit ( sold for an Ultra Lite kiln)  and it gives info for temps up to 1550 degrees. My question is:   Do temp controllers have to "match" the wattage of a kiln?  IOW, if my kiln can get to a higher temp than 1550, and I use this controller, will the controller "fry"?

     Thank you!!!!!!  Ahronya

Just reread my message.  To clarify: my old Trinkit uses 1500 watts, where the Ultra Lite uses only 240 Watts.

(when are you going to learn to always proofread, silly?)

What voltage? No control dial? Is the company still in business? Contact them for this information if they are still around. Maybe they can fix your problem.

I am no expert, but I'd certainly tread with caution here.  I don't think I'd personally be comfortable trying to use a controller designed for 1/6 the power output needed by the device being driven, not without input from someone genuinely knowledgeable.  At best it might do a lousy job and at worst cause an electrical fire.  Does the manufacturer have old user's manuals on line?

    Dear Dressagewoman,

I talked to a few electricians and they can't tell me anything unless they see the unit. I would assume it wouldn't work either...scary, too.  But, I guess I was hoping for a good answer. Thank you for your concern. Electricity scares me...treading cautiously for sure!

Also, to the other responder...the problem is that I have no paperwork, manual, no original thermostat thingie ( if there ever was one) and the people who say they are selling the newer version are most definitely wrong b/c this one uses 1500W and the UltraLite uses only 240-250W.  But, thank you for your advise. I like the way we artists support and help each other!  :)

    Peace.
