    Question about wire weaving

I just finished completing a tutorial of a woven bezel that was in a recent magazine.  I used 18g for the core and 22g for the weaving.  It turned out about how a first time project turns out - ick.  But I see the potential and expect my next one will turn out better.

I had a problem maintaining the width of my bezel along the length.  Some places were wide and others narrow.  How do you maintain a consistant width?  The tutorial recommended using a square bead on one side of the core wire to snug up the wrapping and to use as a guide for the width.  I used one but it wasn't large enough to act as a guide for the width.  Do I need to go shopping for a larger square bead or are there other techniques for doing this?

    Thanks!

I think that tutorial was from Szarka and she can explain the bead, which was a super idea.  I think she is close by in this group ;-)

I sometimes do multiple strands and have found that combs work (I just break out the teeth to get them to the right "dents per inch" - which is a weaving term used to define the holes per inch in reeds that the weavers use to beat in the warp and help keep the spacing accurate.  You could also put brads in a small dowel (a square one would be easier to use.)

    Hope it helps,

     Hai there!

I am a new member and a very keen one. I've not much exposure and experience in jewelry making, but I am very keen to learn. I hope you can suggest what should my early steps be. I would appreciate this.

    Thank you!

Whoa!  Those are excellent ideas, Louise!   I used a square bead, myself, but it really wasn't big enough--I just kinda compensated by messin' with it as I went along, ya know?  At least, it gave me a pretty good approximation~~~just havta to assessing it and keep on track, I guess.

Thanks for the ideas Louise!  I guess practice probably helps too :)  I'll keep at it until I get it.

How about inserting a jump ring where you need the space?  Pick a gauge that's going to give the gap you need, move it around as needed?

Thanks Jilla, that's a good idea for within the weave.  I didn't explain it very well but I was having a problem with my frame wires moving so my weave was wider in some areas and narrower in others.  I found a big bead I can use as a spacer that I think will help me (along with more practice) maintain a consistant width on the frame.

BTW, it was great meeting you, Sparklebee and BeadDragoness at the Gem Faire in Costa Mesa!!

I think you are talking about an article written by Iza Malczyk who is member of this group.  you can see much of her work on the "Show us your work" Forum. There is also links to her web site.

    Re: Question about wire weaving

I think you are talking about the pendant Dancing feather (Sherry) did for the mag. She mentioned me in it because I carry the square beads with large holes.

That is probably where you got my name associated with it.

They are really beautiful pendants. I spent the afternoon with her today and she had them on her wrists and neck with a viking weave. That woman is very talented with a pair of pliers.

Hi, all~!  Sherry, is so talented...I didn't find the exact piece you were referrin' to, but, I know of what you speak.

what kinda flipped me out, was when i clicked on "next blog."  I thought I might see more of her designs, but, was (def) mistaken.  ????

How does this blog thang work?  I'm cornfused...

(perhaps, I should be more specific about my confusion.  When you have a blog, do you also design/have control/input over what the links are, as far as the "next blog" thang?  Sorry for my ignorance, as I haven't put together a blog, yet...thx).

    Iris,

You don't even have to go very far afield for something that will work as well as a bead. Try a multiple strand spacer. The holes are huge, and the ones I've seen come with 2 - 9 holes at regular intervals. They are generally made of metal, so you can use them for compressing your work as well. The other "fixit" if you are crafty,(and do bears do their business in the woods?) is a popsicle stick with cleanly drilled holes. That way, you can space them as closely or as far apart as you wish, and make them as big as you need. You can push your work close as well, and the soft wood mostly doesn't mar your wire. Just some suggestions that work for me!

    Hope you find your solution!

wow, perri, I love your ideas~!     I've got the multiple-hole spacers, but, I never thought of using them!  And the popsicle sticks?  kewl beans!  Actually, I have a buncha tongue-compressors, which would prolly fit the bill, eh?

    thanx!
