I started out using silver plated wire because I thought I would save money.  When you work with real silver, there is no comparison, it makes the work so much easier.  Sorry I don't know a source for what you are looking for.  Jeanie

Artbeads sells SS & FREE SHipping! - Re: Silver Filled Wire Source

     Hi there!

Mark Lareau owner of The Bead Factory sells silver & Gold-filled wire at very reasonable prices.  Ebay member CatDancingRanch also sells Silver & Gold-Filled wire.  Though this 10/40 wire costs less than Sterling wire, I much prefer to work with the Sterling Silver wire!  For Sterling wire I LOVE Artbeads.com!  They sell wonderful Sterling wire & everything you buy, no matter how small of an order qualifies for FREE Shipping!  I know it's crazy but true!  Thanks! Juli ;)

FYI, if you are selling in the US, you can not legally call 10/40 wire (1/40th 10K RGP) gold filled.  You must refer to it as rolled gold plate.

See http://www.artisanplating.com/articles/goldfilled.html "commercial designations and markings" or http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/guides/jewel-gd.shtm 23.4 for more information.

To meet the definition for gold filled, the wire must be at least 1/20th gold => 5% by weight. This is normally abreviated as 14K/20. 14K/10 is at least 1/10th gold => 10% by weight.

There is also a 14K/40. Beware here - 14K/40 means 1/40th by weight = 2.5%. There are vendors that call this gold filled. BY FED REGS (US), it does not meet the standard for gold filled and can only legally be called rolled gold plate. All gold filled can be called rolled gold plate - but in the US only items with 5% or greater gold by weight can be called gold filled.

     Great info, Gypse!

Gold Filled  (GF) and Rolled Gold Plate (RGP) are not well understood. The link yu gave to Artisan plating has the best descriptions I know of.

You are right that GF must be at least 1./20th and at least 12 Kt fineness or more. 10Kt gold must be 1/10th to be gold filled. Anything less is, as you say, Rolled Gold Plate. 1/20 10Kt or 1/40th 19kt are both RGP.(or 10/10 GF, 10/20RGP or 10/40RGP if  you prefer that designation.) These definitions are valid in the US but not necessarily in other countries.

If you are going to get a lot of the wire try Stern and Leach (the big boys) If you only want a small amount try UNIVERSAL WIRECRAFT in Bradenton Florida. I don't think they have a website but the guy that owns the company is name Neal Barnet and I do think they still carry it.
