    Repousse frog

Here is a study of a frog I did a few years ago in sterling using the repousse process to get the relief and form.  1" diameter disk of 20 gauge silver.

Neat! Did you do it freehand, or are there patterns available?

    Re: Repousse frog

    Thanks for the compliments.

The frog is formed freehand.  There is no mold.  I sketch the original design on the front and then score the lines with a liner.  The back is then raised up fairly high ad the the piece is modeled with punches to create the final shapes.

This frog was done as a study and It is part of a portfolio I use when I teach.  I have made pendants from similar items that I have made.

I am teaches a 2 day workshop here in Tucson on repoussed faces in March.

Fred, this is a lovely little piece! Are you becoming addicted to chasing and repousse too!  This technique is so much fun, isn't it.

    Valentin,

I have been addicted with the process for several years now.  It's history is rich and the possibilities are limitless.  All the aspects interest me including the tool making.  I love working with the metal and designing the tools to help sculpt it into shapes.  I am indebted to all who preceeded me in the craft and art.

My hats off to you in exposing the process to a greater body of people in your workshops and your exquisite work.  This is a wonderful age we live in with all the free flow of information.  I do share your passion for the process.

    Hi Fred,

Love your frog!!!  It looks so alive.

What kind of faces will you be teaching?

    Re: Repousse frog

I did not keep track of the time it took me to make this piece.  Most of the faces i make take me about 4 hours.  A great deal depends on the amount of detail I choose to add to the face.

I use 20 to 18 gauge for most of the repoussed pieces.

I will be teaching how to make human faces using the repousse and chasing techniques.

Such a beautiful frog!  I love how you make the thin metal look like substantial stone.  It would make a great ring.

    Kirsten,

I raise the entire area that I will be working to the greatest height of my object and then I push back the rest of the design.  This allow me to work laterally and to get extreme depth without breaking through the metal.

    Holly,

I love sharing my passions with those who share it.  I am just a kid at heart and I love show and tell.  I am also paying homage to those metalsmiths who preceeded me and I feel a debt to pass on what I have learned.

Fred, what a beautiful piece!  I love everything about it - the shape, the texture, the color.  And teaching - I agree with you, it is a great joy.  My favorite part of it is when a student not only gets your idea, but makes a step forward and does something new with the technique you are teaching.

    Absolutely fantastic.

I have just started taking some metal working classes, learning basic soldering, bezels, tube settings & such.  I find it so exciting & then when I see work like your work I can only hope that someday I will have a chance to do the type of work that you do.  You are truly an inspiration to us all.
