Free Tutorial - Wire Wrapped setting for a faceted stone

    Materials:

Faceted stone, soldered jump ring (18 or 20 gauge) the same size as the stone, 26 or 28 gauge wire.

    Step one:

Starting in the middle of a piece of wire, wrap one end of the wire around the jump ring, as shown in the photo, making six evenly spaced double loops around the outside of the ring. I'm using a hatpin as my mandrel. The length of wire needed will vary, for a 5mm setting, I use 10-12 inches of wire. Wrap the wire around the jump ring to finish, cut and pinch it tightly with your pliers to keep it there.

    Step two:

Take the other end of the wire, and slip it through the first set of loops, as shown in the photo. Continue going around the circle, catching each loop, and smoothing the wire on top of the stone. Make sure each wrap catches the top of the stone. The stone will want to slip out, so watch it!

    Step three:

After you wrap the last set of loops, wrap the wire around the jump ring, cut it flush, and use your pliers to tighten it.

    Variation:

You can go around the loops again, making the loops on the outside, to make flower links. You can separate the double loops to make a decorative edging.

If you use this tutorial, I'd love to see what you do!! Or, if you have any questions, or ideas for new variations, I'd like to see those, too. Please post anything related to this tutorial in this thread!

I'd still love to see this in the wirework folder. (and metal tutes in the metal folder, beading tutes in the beading folder....etc)

BUT - I appreciate your efforts and your upbeat and positive attitude! :)

I respect that, the only way to make a change is by example, I do appreciate your tutorial, and I know that your intentions are clean.

lol, yeah, *headbang* it occurred to me right after I hit "post" that I was putting it in the wrong section. Maybe one of the mods will move it.

    lol.

Well, it was just a thought....lol

Someone else will think it should be in here - its impossible to please everyone, but I love that you are so open to sharing. For me, its still an 'up' side of the biz though it can be hard to find. :)

By the way - it really is a cool technique - whats the smallest stone you've done with it? I've got those little buggers I bought to flush set.....I'm thinking theyd be tough to do this way...

hmmm, I think either 3 or 4mm, I can't remember if I went down to 3mm, but I know I have done lots of 4mm stones this way. The only hard part is keeping the stone from slipping out during the last step.

Thanks. The largest ones I bought were 3.0, most were under. But I do have some other faceted stones that are much larger that would be fun to try this with. I'll post pics. I've been wanting to do a little wirework here lately - its been a while.

    Cindy,

Thanks so much for the tutorial. I have not yet tried the wire wrapping. It looks so cool, but tedious. You are very generous in taking the time to post the instructions and sharing with us. I am definitely trying this. I have craft wire so I'm going to do a trial run with that before using sterling.

    Cindy,

i had already seen you wonderful tutorial before (cagey crafters) and I have to admit that I haven't tried it because I haven't found good gems for that.

Anyway, it's really nice of you to share your work and I always welcome the effort from people who post their tutorials, either for free or for sale.

I also love your stories, connected to the jewelry you're presenting. I hope you can develop more tutorials, I will check your website!

    cheers!

Thanks, Gaby! I have more free tutorials scattered about, but since this forum doesn't support PDF attachments, I really can't post the rest of them here. They're just too big. One of these days I'll make a website and get serious about posting tuts, I just haven't had the time to make very many thus far.
