Oh and one other thing...
You said you were using copper wire from spools. You probably / most definitely need to anneal the wire. If you're using a fine gauge I would recommend annealing it in a kiln. Annealing large quantities of fine gauge wire with a torch can be tricky (you may melt your wire) and inconsistent ( you may miss parts ...

I did a round braid. I didn't use spools. My wires were cut to length and marked on the ends. Cinching the wire into the slots didn't seem as important as making sure you kept the top of braid at the same level as the top of the disc. I found by keeping it up there and making sure my wire was almost folded and pushed down on ...
