Different brands of translucent are more or less translucent than others. Premo, for example, tends to bake to a grayish color unless it's very, very thin.
You might want to try making your object out of a very light hue to put behind the translucent, and keeping the tinted translucent layer almost paper ...

You can probably still salvage it but that will vary depending on how soft the clay was when you originally got it. If it won't condition, you can always try to use a little liquid, etc. Or go the other way, bake it, and then grate it to use as a mix-in.

There isn't a one-size fits all solution, unfortunately. The accordian folder type idea works pretty well for the large, loose coils because you can sort wire by shape, hardness and gauge. But if you have really big coils, that gets too clunky.

Hmmm. Perhaps large grit sand paper would scuff it up a bit. LOS takes down the shie but it sounds like you don't want to change the color, just the finish. Sounds like some experimentation might be in your future.

No, not weird. The idea to angle the end of the wire is a good one. Flatten, trim to angle, and wrap it down. A very nice finishing detail.
