Tools, tools, tools! Do you wonder what tools you should get if you're going to take up metalsmithing? How about metal clay, or polymer clay? Or, maybe you want to know what tools you should have on hand no matter what medium you're working in. Well, here's your answer: In the November 2008...

For our November 2008 issue , Ron Pascho contributed a great article on an innovative way to etch metal by using saltwater. Part of the etching process involves using Press-n-Peel (or PnP) paper as a resist. The paper, originally invented for etching circuit boards for high-tech industries, has become...

If it's nickel, I'd give ferric chloride a try. It should do the job, though it may take a while. If that didn't work for some reason, there are acidic options like Muriatic Acid and Nitric Acid. But those are NASTY chemicals that I wouldn't advise you use without some prepwork and a...

Hi Sue, What metal were you thinking about trying?? The term " base metals " covers a lot of ground. Ferric chloride will etch copper-based alloys such as copper, brass, and bronze. For non-copper bearing metals, you would need to find another etching solution. ~Addie~

I finally got an etching project finished successfully! Yeah! Here's a link to a picture of it: http://picasaweb.google.com/cvcarufel/JewelryShots/photo#5228825230675725634 I had lots of trouble getting the transfer accomplishedl. I scrubbed that puppy so many times I thought I'd have prune hads...

Hi there I have been doing various etching projects using PnP (press and peel) film. Generally I seem to be getting the hang of it now and getting some really good results but what can still happen is that some areas of unetched silver (protected by the dark areas of the PnP) is ending up with a slightly...

Addie, Thanks for the link for ferric nitrate. I had heard of it, but couldn't find where to buy it. I'm actually happy with the results I'm getting with the nitric acid, now that I have found the right resist. It works in 30 minutes, and it is not as scary as everyone says. Good common sense...

Addie, Linda, and all....... The etching mordant I am using is sold by Rio Grande. The MSDS sheet says it is nitric acid. I tried using staedler red permanent marker, and sharpie, which both are supposed to work with ferric chloride, but I can tell you from experience, they do not work with nitric acid...

Connie, I'm curious what chemical you're using for your silver. I've never had tremendous success with Sharpie markers as a resist. But I've used RED inked Lumocolor pens plenty of times (for copper and silver), and they hold up pretty well. But it would depend on your chemical, that's...
